Cienega Corridor Tour: Community Conservation in Action
The Rincon Institute is partnering with La Ruta de Sonora and the Cienega Corridor Conservation Council for a natural resource and historical tour of the Rincon Valley and greater Cienega Watershed. The tour of the Cienega Creek Corridor is on Saturday, December 3rd from 9am – 5pm. The Tour will begin at the Rincon Valley Farmers’ Market, with opportunities for warm breakfast burritos and purchase of local crafts. The Rincon Institute and the Cienega Corridor Conservation Council will speak about their goals to protect and enhance the natural and cultural heritage of the area through education and citizen action. The group will then go to Colossal Cave Mountain Park to learn about the cultural history of the Rincon Valley and local conservation successes.

The next stop will be the town of Vail, and then on down to Empire Ranch and Las Cienegas National Conservation Area. We will hear from folks at the Empire Ranch Foundation who will tell us about the historic ranch and conservation actions on Las Cienegas National Conservation Area.

The tour will include lunch in quaint and rural Sonoita. We will round out the informative and fun tour with a trip to Patagonia to learn of the conservation- friendly development associated with the new La Semilla Community Stewardship Organization.

The Tour is presented by La Ruta de Sonora. La Ruta presents a unique ecotourism experience because it uses only certified local hosts, including naturalists, biologists, historians, archaeologists, and wilderness outfitters. In doing so, visitors gain a true understanding and appreciation for the cultures and peoples of the region. As ecotourism and heritage tourism emerge, La Ruta seeks to underscore the importance of retaining healthy natural spaces and vibrant local cultures.
