Saguaro National Park Seeking Volunteers for the 2010 Saguaro Census |

Saguaro National Park is seeking volunteer individuals and groups to conduct our 2010 Saguaro Census from October 2009 through April 2010. The park counts and measures saguaros every 10 years to assess the health of our population. After declining for many decades, Saguaro populations in the park's Rincon Mountain District began to rebound in the 1970s, and these younger saguaros are continuing to grow towards adulthood.
The Saguaro Census will be conducted on plots throughout both the Tucson Mountain (west) and Rincon Mountain (east) district of the park. Most plots will be surveyed on Saturdays, but some surveys will take place on other days.
Volunteers must be physically fit, capable of hiking short distances in rough desert terrain, and able to work outdoors for approximately 6 hours. No experience is needed, but interest in nature and science is highly desired.
The Saguaro Census is timed to coincide with the U.S. Census, which also takes place every 10 years. The last Saguaro Census was in 2000.
